Feel the Warmth of “The Sun Song”

“The Sun Song” was inspired by a video of a sunrise that was posted by a friend of mine on social media over this past summer. I had four open chords that I was “walking” down the guitar neck, a la The Beatles song “Dear Prudence,” and the lyric Sunrise in your eyes, looking out for a new surprise began repeating in my consciousness. I felt a rush of elation and was overcome with hope and possibility. The groove reminded me of The Doobie Brothers classic tune “Black Water” with its laid-back feel and upbeat chorus.

The first verse is about being kind and patient with yourself and others as you walk through this life, especially during the current times with social and political unrest that are taxing on us all:

In the whole world the peaceful, loving

Times are faster to grow from nothing

There comes into focus the kindness of selflessness

That takes a few moments to show you the whole Truth

The second verse focuses on letting go of control of other people and ideologies, and elevating your vibration with a youthful vitality:

When the comfort of day brings us everything

Life can really show us where we get caught up livin’ in the little things

Look at the young ones, they ain’t holding back making their impact

On the rest of us to learn a little bit, raise up and elevate

The chorus is my ode to the sun. The sunrise is a universal process of opening and awakening for diurnal beings (of or belonging to the daytime) and has long been used as a metaphor for renewed hope and a fresh start. My take on this metaphor speaks to the sun’s power to deliver warmth and redemption to our hearts and minds as it glows and emits its life energy:

Sunrise in your eyes, looking out for a new surprise

High over the moon arose a floating star, one that keeps the glow

Sunshine in my mind, where there ain’t nothin’ more but to move through time

I know the warm wind blows through an open heart, one that lives again

In the bridge, I combine two common phrases as a nod to folklore and the magical endings we desire for our life’s journeys. This line speaks to the reality that the “happily ever after” does not come without the trials, tribulations, successes, and failures that come before it.

The happily ever after comes with everything under the sun

The overall energy of this song is one of happiness and joy naturally arising from within. The process of writing this song was incredibly cathartic to me and it renewed my spirit with warmth and hope for the future. I invite you to listen and tune into your emotions while you do. For anyone dealing with anxious or depressive thoughts, listening to a positive song like this one and focusing on the lyrics can really help to shift those thoughts toward peace.
