A Flash of Hope
“Between the Light” was inspired while reminiscing through some old photo albums that I found in my Mom’s house. As I perused the old pics, memories flooded back from growing up in the 1970s and my teen years in the 1980s. And not just those snapshots, but the feelings that accompanied them.
How I felt about myself, how I felt toward others around me, and even how I feel toward those people present day. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and childhood friends—memories and emotions of them encircled and transported me to another place in another time.
The musical arrangement that came through for this song is a modern folky style reminiscent of The Lumineers mixed with some old-school Cat Stevens. As soon as the song was ready for production, I knew it needed a little accompaniment. So, I asked my producer to sprinkle in his mandolin, and he expertly played it throughout the song, elevating the energy exponentially.
The first verse is a testament to going through life’s challenges and searching for answers while walking through grief and loss:
Up and down that long road of aching,
Looking out for the one that really knows,
What can be from what’s been taken from everyone that hasn’t come home.
The second verse brings us to the growth and expansion that comes from going through the pain of loss and the changes we go through in life:
One day we all will remember,
How it felt to really be alone.
Just to feel whole ever after, knowing that we gave Love as our own.
The chorus asks us all who is available to help, to connect, to empathize, and to walk the line between the Light of Love (our spiritual Source) and danger (the human element) that comes up in life:
Who will help the hopeless stranger home?
To walk between the Light of Love and danger that meets us where we are.
The third verse leads us to the solution that lies in our hearts within us. The forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, and empathy that come through the “tenderness of Love in action” that is accessible to all who are open to it.
In the middle of anger and sadness, there is a place where anyone can go.

A song like “Between the Light” can help to relieve worry, frustration, and harsh criticism of self and others. Through a resonating vibration that lifts the spirit, it initiates relaxation and positive emotions. Listen to this song when you want to remember the feelings of hope and unbounded spirit that come from connecting with yourself in the past and being present with your Source in the present.
