You Are a Spiritual Being

Around 2006, I came across a gentleman named Wayne Dyer on the PBS channel. In fact, that was actually one of the few channels I had at that time, because I had chosen not to have cable (but that’s a topic for another time). Some of you may be familiar with his work. He died in 2015, but in the 2000s he was absolutely the man. He was writing books and doing specials on the power of intention, inspiration, and other powerful topics.

The Power of Intention special was on at this particular time, and I was completely inspired by his insights on how we create our lives through our thoughts, mindset, and beliefs. Soon after, he actually came to Ft. Lauderdale for a speaking gig, and I went to see him live with some friends. One of the first things he said was, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

Our Being Is Beyond This World

As soon as he said that, it resonated with me in a big way. I began thinking more and more about the concept and seeing the truth in it. I’m not a human being trying to be spiritual, or I would be stuck because I would be of this world. The reality is that my body is of this world. My mind and ego are also of this world. My being, who I truly am, is not of this world—it is beyond this world.

We are born into this world, and we live in this world; however, we are not of it. It was really critical for me to learn and embrace this, and to carry the concept forward with me. When I feel that I am of this world, I am in suffering. This is because of my attachment to the meaning of whatever is being given to me. Even if the meaning is good, the attachment is ultimately limiting, as I am holding on to it and placing too much value on whatever that may be. If the meaning is negative, then it is even worse, as I then get attached to the feelings of depression and anxiety that I experience as a result.

Integrating This Into Our Lives

How do we integrate this concept into our lives? Well, it’s simple—not easy. That’s because the ego believes that this world is all there is. We have to transcend our ego through mindfulness and spiritual practices to feel the power of our true spiritual being that we actually are. When we do that, we realize that we are indeed just in this world for a temporary experience. So, what do we do while we’re here? Well, we play the game, so to speak. We do our best to live the human experience through relationships, family, careers, community, hobbies, and everything else this world offers.

As I like to say, “God help me to be myself, do my best, and let go of the rest.” When I am being myself, I am present while I’m here in this world. When I am doing my best, I am making use of my gifts and talents. And, finally, when I let go of the rest, I am focusing on what I can control and letting go of the things I cannot. As with most things, this concept is ultimately best used in the moment. When we get too caught up in this world, we can take a breath and re-center ourselves on the reality of our spiritual nature. We can remember and realize that we are not bound to the world and its ways—our true spiritual nature is transcendent and abundant.
